Dislodging Jack Johnson from the top after a three-week reign, Janet Jackson's "Discipline" bows at No. 1 on The Billboard 200. The Island Def Jam set moved 181,000 copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen Soundscan, becoming the artist's sixth chart-topper.

Her last two Virgin albums, 2004's "Damita Jo" and 2006's "20 Y.O.," both debuted and peaked at No. 2, though "Damita" started with 381,000 while "20 Y.O." began with 296,000. Johnson's "Sleep Through the Static" (Brushfire) falls 1-3 with 92,000, a 12% sales decline.

"4th World War," the first half of Erykah Badu's double album series "New Amerykah," debuts at No. 2, selling 124,000 copies. It's the R&B singer's first studio effort since 2003's "Worldwide Underground," an EP that began at No. 3 with 144,000. The second, as-yet-untitled portion "New Amerykah" is due some time this summer via Universal Motown.

Rapper Webbie's "Savage Life 2" (Asylum/Trill Entertainment) starts at No. 4 after selling 72,000. Sales were helped in part by the track "Independent," performed with Lil' Phat and Boosie, which is steadily rising on the Hot 100. Webbie's last solo effort, "Savage Life," debuted at No. 8 in 2005 with 68,000.

Despite an 8% sales increase, Alicia Keys' "As I Am" (J) slips 2-5 with 57,000. Miley Cyrus' Disney double-disc "Hannah Montana 2 (Soundtrack)/Meet Miley Cyrus" experiences an 86% sales boost, propelling the effort 14-6 with 54,000. The young singer was recently featured on Barbara Walters' Oscar night interview special on ABC.

Speaking of Oscars, two Academy Award-winning titles are also featured in the top 10. With music from the Frames' Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova, the Canvasback/Sony Music Soundtrax soundtrack to "Once" climbs 31-7 with 47,000 (+142%), after the duo won the best original song Oscar. The Rhino soundtrack to "Juno" falls 6-8 with 42,000, a 10% increase.

Sara Bareilles' Epic album "Little Voice" is down 7-9 with 37,000 (+1%), while Amy Winehouse's Universal Republic set "Back to Black" slips 3-10, also with 37,000 (-27%).

Debuting at No. 13, D4L member Shawty Lo's solo debut, "Units in the City" (Asylum), shifts 31,000. Dolly Parton's "Backwoods Barbie" starts at No. 17, the country legend's highest debut ever. Released through her own Dolly Records label, the new project shifted 27,000 units in its first week.

Other debuts this week include the original Broadway cast recording of "Disney's The Little Mermaid" at No. 26 with 20,000, the Afters' "Never Going Back to OK" (INO/Columbia) at No. 41 with 16,000 and Goldfrapp's Mute set "Seventh Tree" at No. 48 with 15,000.

Sales this week are down less than 1% from last week at 7.95 million units and down 6.4% from the same week last year.

Paula Abdul Plotting Comeback Album

After re-launching her music career with an appearance on fellow "American Idol" judge Randy Jackson's new album, Paula Abdul is getting busy on her first new album since 1995's "Head Over Heels."

The as-yet-untitled project will include remixes of Abdul's best-known hits, plus a host of new songs. In addition, Abdul tells Billboard that Paul Oakenfold and Akon are preparing remixes of "Dance Like There's No Tomorrow," her contribution to Jackson's album. The artist has already chosen three new tracks to accompany the remixes.

"I will always be grateful for Randy getting me back into even the idea of helping me do this," says Abdul. "I didn't realize how much I missed it."

For the artist, whose last new single was 1995's "Crazy Cool," the collaboration with Jackson consummated several years of vague conversations about working together. But during "Idol" auditions last July in San Diego, "Randy kept saying to me, 'I've got the perfect song for you. It sounds like you, like now, it's like a nod to you and your past, but it's you now,' " Abdul says. "And he played it, and it was after the first two bars, I knew it was a hit. I knew it was a total smash."

"Dance Like There's No Tomorrow" was produced by Jackson and the Danish duo known as Deekay. Oliver Leiber, who wrote and produced Abdul's "Forever Your Girl" and "(It's Just) The Way That You Love Me," did some additional vocal production.

Abdul, who scored her biggest hits with Virgin, now finds herself a free agent amid a music business that has changed drastically since her glory days. "I'm already getting interesting phone calls," she says. "I want to have the ability to expand on my other talents. I want to be more of a partner."

Abdul is hoping "to have another single out by the end of 'Idol.' I could have another single out, and another single after that, and then have an album out before Christmas. It's the best of all worlds."

Also on the horizon: a return to live performance. Abdul says she's been offered the opportunity to make guest appearances during the annual "American Idol" summer tour, but she says she's aiming higher.

"For me, I have to have the visuals and the staging. That's what people expect from me, and the 'Idol' tour doesn't allow for that," she observes. "I have a whole plan. I do things that are very different and I'm all about setting a new trend and exploring. I have a lot of cool ideas."

New Whitney Houston On Target For Holiday Release

Whitney Houston's first album of original material since 2002 will be out this year, according to BMG Label Group chairman/CEO Clive Davis.

Speaking during Billboard's Music & Money Symposium this morning (March 6) at New York's St. Regis Hotel, Davis said four songs have been completed for the as-yet-untitled project, and four more will be put to tape later this month.

"We're on track for a holiday release," he said. "We're not going to compromise who she is to fit into today's hip-hop radio market. The public wants Whitney material."

Tracks earmarked for the album have been produced or written by will.i.am, Sean Garrett and Akon, who told Billboard.com last year, "The voice is there; I don't think anyone could ever take that from her. As long as we apply that voice to hit records, she'll be right back where she left off."

Houston has been dogged in recent years by drug and health issues -- including rehab stints in 2004 and 2005 -- a legal dispute with her father, John Houston, rumored financial problems and a troubled marriage to fellow singer Bobby Brown that ended in divorce.

Mariah Carey is still That Girl, but her album won't be titled that anymore.

The singer said in a statement Tuesday (February 12) that her upcoming album, will now be called E=MC2 instead of the previously announced That Girl. The forthcoming 11th studio album, the follow-up to her critic-approved The Emancipation of Mimi, is due April 15 on Island Def Jam.

The album's first single, "Touch My Body," which she wrote and produced with Tricky Stewart and The-Dream (the duo behind Rihanna's "Umbrella"), is set to hit radio Tuesday. The video for "Touch My Body" will be directed by longtime collaborator Brett Ratner, who helmed prior Carey clips such as "We Belong Together," "Heartbreaker" and "I Still Believe."

When Carey appeared on "TRL" in October, she offered a few hints regarding her album. She was promoting her fragrance, M by Mariah Carey, and said that creating the perfume and working on her album influenced each other.

"I've been working on this record while I'm working on the fragrance," she said. "I wanted [the fragrance] to be sensual. ... It's really been like writing a song. ... This was almost the same creative process."

Carey also mentioned in October that she "just had a really, really hot session with somebody in Miami." She didn't name names, but producers Cool & Dre told MTV News about various sessions they had with the singer.

"With Mariah, one of her favorite records is 'New York' [by Ja Rule], and she asked us to do a record like that," Dre said. "It was like, we got an opportunity to work with Mariah, and she wants us to do something we already did. But we said, 'You know what? You don't get too many opportunities to work with a Mariah Carey.' And to know you have her ear, you got to impress. So me and Cool decided not to do 'New York.' We wanted to show her we could do big pop records too. We turned it in, and her A&R came back and asked us to go gutter instead. So we made the hardest beat ever in history. We had a bunch of rappers trying to steal the beat, and they couldn't believe we made the beat for her. Jadakiss, Busta Rhymes, all saying they couldn't believe we were giving it to her. And then, she ended up taking the first record anyway."

Other artists scheduled to contribute to E=MC2 include Jermaine Dupri; DJ Toomp (Kanye West, T.I.); Stargate (Ne-Yo, Trey Songz); Will.I.Am; Bryan-Michael Cox (Usher, Mary J. Blige); Danjahandz (Justin Timberlake); and Philadelphia soulster James Poyser (Erykah Badu).

Young singers Jordin Sparks and Chris Brown now share more than both being born in 1989: The unlikely pairing has crossed together into top 40 with the second single from the "American Idol" season-six victor's self-titled debut album, following her top 10 debut, "Tattoo." R&B singer Brown has already scaled the Billboard Hot 100 twice, with 2005's "Run It!" and 2006's "Kiss Kiss," both of which also leaned upon guests: Juelz Santana and T-Pain, respectively. "No Air" is a sweeping midtempo jam that pushes boundaries, allowing Sparks to show a looser, soulful side, while Brown is cast as pop crooner more than ever before. The result is organically convincing, and likely to offer both artists newfound crossover potential. After delays and much fretting, Epic returned Brit Natasha Bedingfield to U.S. hit turf with "Love Like This." While the cutesy recording was engaging to a point—and reached No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 1 on Hot Dance Club Play—the addition of labelmate rapper Sean Kingston felt deliberate, if not forced. Second single and title track of sophomore album "Pocketful of Sunshine" puts Bedingfield back on accomplished melodic footing. Produced by the peerless John Shanks, the single boasts a soaring, anthemic chorus, gleeful tempo and percussive footprint mighty enough to again demand a fistful of club remixes. And there's plenty more on the full-length to propel the singer/songwriter. "I think a comeback is when you leave and then you . . . come back," Janet Jackson says by way of introduction of "Discipline," her debut for Island Def Jam. "People are always quick to use that word 'comeback,' but I never went anywhere, really."

Due this week, "Discipline," Jackson insists, does not put her in the same camp as Mary J. Blige or Mariah Carey -- it's not her "Breakthrough," nor her "Emancipation." But given the commercially disappointing sales of her preceding Virgin sets, there was a vanishing act of sorts that warrants all the comeback talk.

Heavier on dance tracks than seductive jams (Jackson's other forte), "Discipline" is classic Janet. The title track is one of her typical frisky bedroom cuts, featuring lyrics like, "I need some discipline tonight/I've been very bad" and "Daddy, make me cry." In addition to production by Jackson's longtime boyfriend Jermaine Dupri, Island's head of urban music, "Discipline" also features tracks by newcomers the-Dream and Tricky Stewart ("Umbrella," "Bed"), Lil Jon, Stargate and songwriters Ne-Yo and Johnta Austin.

With "Discipline," the aim was to innovate without totally reinventing the wheel. "There's so much that I've done, from 'Black Cat' to 'I Get Lonely' to 'That's the Way Love Goes' to 'Together Again.' I have never stuck to one style of music ever," Jackson says. "There are some things that maybe I'll try for right now and some things I'll wait later on to try. It's [about] sticking to who I am. Even lyrically, something that I've experienced or someone that I know has experienced, it has to relate to my life and myself."

Flo Rida's "Low" enters a 10th week at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with "Low," while another new track, "Elevator," rockets 100-28 thanks to digital sales of 64,000 units. The rapper's debut album, "Mail on Sunday," is still more than three weeks away from its March 18 release via Poe Boy/Atlantic.

Chris Brown's "With You" and Rihanna's "Don't Stop the Music" remain at Nos. 2 and 3, respectively on the Hot 100, while Sara Bareilles' "Love Song" inches up 5-4, a new chart peak. Alicia Keys' "No One" is down 4-5, and Timbaland's "Apologize" featuring OneRepublic remains No. 6.

Snoop Dogg's "Sensual Seduction" stays put at No. 7, and Sean Kingston's "Take You There" is stagnant at No. 8. Webbie, Lil' Phat & Boosie's "Independent" moves 10-9, trading places with Buckcherry's "Sorry" to round out the top 10.

Jordin Sparks' "No Air" featuring Chris Brown is the top digital gainer after selling 73,000 downloads and moving 23-13 on the Hot 100. Usher's "Love In This Club" featuring Young Jeezy is the fastest growing song at radio, soaring 83-51 in its second week.

George Strait's "I Saw God Today" is the top Hot 100 debut at No. 54. The track also jumps 15-12 on Hot Country Songs.

New on the Hot 100 at No. 80 is Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson's "Dance Like There's No Tomorrow," Abdul's first chart appearance since 1995's "Crazy Cool." The song appears on "American Idol" judge Jackson's new Dream Merchant 21/Concord album, "Randy Jackson's Music Club Vol. 1," which arrives March 11.

Keyshia Cole is No. 1 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs for a third week. On that chart, the new Usher track is also the top airplay gainer and enjoys a 23-15 increase.

On Hot Country Songs, Rodney Atkins' "Cleaning This Gun (Come on in Boy)" is atop the chart for a second week. The top debut comes from Rascal Flatts' "Every Day" at No. 42, the third chart entry from their latest Lyric Street album, "Still Feels Good."

Billboard's rock charts are unchanged from last week, with Foo Fighters at No. 1 on Modern Rock with "Long Road To Ruin" for a second frame and Puddle Of Mudd's "Psycho" leading Mainstream Rock for a third.

With the 13-week writers' strike settled and the Academy Awards ceremony set to go on in the usual star-studded fashion, songwriting will be honored at the Feb. 24 event in the best original song category. Three of this year's five nominees are culled from Walt Disney's "Enchanted," but "Falling Slowly" from the surprise hit "Once" -- which was the tenth best-selling soundtrack of 2007 -- and "Raise It Up" from the film "August Rush" have just as much of a chance at earning the Oscar. "Once," the little film that could, was released last May and earned more than $9 million at the box office. But its male star, Glen Hansard of veteran Irish band the Frames, almost didn't appear in the movie at all.

Director John Carney had already chosen to use Hansard's songs in "Once" before casting, but after the intended star dropped out, he turned to the singer/songwriter, who previously appeared in the film "The Commitments," to fill the role. "I actually recommended Damien Rice," Hansard recalls. "But John said, 'Then I'd have to use his songs, and I really like these ones I've already chosen.' " A few days later, Carney had an epiphany. "It's as plain as the nose on my face that you should be the guy in this film," he told Hansard, who reluctantly agreed.

Hansard plays a busker in the movie, which also stars his bandmate in the Swell Season, Czech singer/pianist Marketa Irglova. The Frames are superstars at home but little-known in the United States, but thanks to strong word-of-mouth, Columbia's "Once" soundtrack has sold over 350,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan, many times more than that of any Frames record. "If people like the music enough to want to hear it again, they'll draw a line between me and the band," he says. "All they have to do is Google my name and the Frames come up."

Hansard often played the soundtrack's now-nominated "Falling Slowly" solo acoustic during the Frames' North American tour last year. With "Once" having exceeded everyone's expectations, could another film be in the works? "John's talking about making another one at some point, called 'Twice,' " Hansard says. "Then the third one would be called 'Three Times a Lady.'"

Hansard and Irglova will be on hand at the Academy Awards ceremony to perform "Falling Slowly" at the Academy Awards.

"August Rush," which stars Keri Russell, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Freddie Highmore and Jamia Simone Nash, unfolds as a sophisticated fairy tale in which characters are defined by the music they perform. Because the film centers on a young musical prodigy who was separated from his parents at birth, Warner Bros. hosted several in-school music programs across the United States and worked with VH1 Save the Music. "The heart of the story is how we respond and connect through music," score composer Mark Mancina says. "The way the [main character] is going to find his parents is through music -- not the Internet or the Yellow Pages."

Warner Bros' marketing push was heavily supported by Sony, which issued the movie's soundtrack on Nov. 6. Eleven-year-old Nash, who previously portrayed a young Fantasia Barrino in a 2006 TV movie, will perform "Raise It Up" at the Academy Awards.

"Enchanted," which boasts a soundtrack containing three of this year's nominated songs, used 2-D animation, live action and CGI to tell the story of a princess (Amy Adams) who is pushed down a well, comes up through a manhole in modern-day New York and falls in love with a single father (Patrick Dempsey). And who better to sell a fairy tale than Carrie Underwood? The singer, whom Walt Disney Studios president of music and soundtracks Mitchell Leib calls "America's princess," sings the Alan Menken/Stephen Schwartz song "Ever Ever After" at the end of the movie. Underwood's "Ever Ever After," however, was not one of the songs up for an Academy Award. The three numbers nominated, which have collectively sold 177,00 digital downloads, were also written by film music veterans Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz ("Pocahontas," "Hunchback of Notre Dame"). "Happy Working Song" will be performed at the Academy Awards ceremony by Amy Adams, "That's How You Know," will be performed by Kristin Chenoweth and Marlon Saunders, and Jon McLaughlin will sing "So Close," at the Feb. 24 ceremony.

Beyonce Knowles is adding "executive producer" to her resume. The 10-time Grammy winner has signed on to executive produce and star in Darnell Martin's "Cadillac Records" for Sony BMG Films.

Knowles will play Etta James in the 1950s period film about the Chicago record company Chess Records; its founder, Leonard Chess; and the turbulent lives of some of the label's legends, who included Muddy Waters, Little Walter, Howlin' Wolf and Chuck Berry.

Martin ("Their Eyes Were Watching God") penned the screenplay. Sony BMG's Andrew Lack and Sofia Sondervan are producing for the 3-year-old specialty label.

Knowles joins a cast that includes Adrien Brody (Chess), Jeffrey Wright (Waters), Cedric the Entertainer (Willie Dixon) and Columbus Short (Little Walter). Emmanuelle Chriqui and Tammy Blanchard co-star.

Music for the film is being produced by Steve Jordan ("Cars," "The Sopranos"). Knowles will record four songs for the soundtrack, which will be released through Music World Entertainment and Columbia Records.

The singer/actress will donate a portion of her fees for the film to recovering addicts through her family's charity, the Survivor Foundation, according to her reps.

Knowles ("Austin Powers in Goldmember") earned a Golden Globe nomination for her role as Deena Jones in 2006's "Dreamgirls" and a 2008 Grammy nomination for best compilation soundtrack album for the film. She also was nominated for the record of the year Grammy this year for her song "Irreplaceable."

Atkins' No. 1 run is the format's second-best active streak, trailing only the six straight chart champs in the past two years by Brad Paisley, whose "Letter to Me" (3-1) gets jumped by "Gun."

The Foo Fighters return to No. 1 on the Modern Rock chart with "Long Road To Ruin," on the heels of a record-breaking pole position run from earlier single "The Pretender." Puddle Of Mudd's "Psycho" is No. 1 on Mainstream Rock for a second week.
